Jaso oil specifications, explanations MOTORCYCLES AND SCOOTERS

JASO T903

In 1998, JASO T903 was introduced as a globally recognised standard for 4-stroke motorcycle oils. It defines the performance levels required for satisfactory lubrication of various motorcycle designs.

JASO T903 consists of two performance categories:
JASO MA: Motorcycle oils with wet clutches. These oils provide the necessary friction to prevent clutch slippage and are therefore anti-friction. These oils can be used in four-stroke motorcycles where there is a single oil system for the engine, transmission and clutch. MA oils are suitable for all applications.
JASO MB: Motorcycle oils with automatic transmission (mopeds). These oils provide the necessary friction by adding friction modifiers that provide fuel economy benefits. These types of oils are the lowest friction oils for four-stroke motorcycles. MB oils should not be used where MA oils are required as they can cause clutch slippage on motorcycles and should therefore only be used in scooters. Scooters have a belt or chain drive and therefore do not require oil.

JASO MA1 and MA2
In 2006, additional categories MA1 and MA2 were added to the JASO MA specification. The main difference between the two categories is the provision of higher friction MA2 oils. This meant that from 2006 onwards, engine oils meeting the T903:2006 standard can be divided into four specifications for four-stroke motorcycle oils:

JASO MA: This is a standard specification for oils used in a single oil system (where the engine, transmission and clutch use the same oil). These oils do not contain friction modifiers.

JASO MA1: This is a lower standard specification for motorcycles that require different oils for the engine, transmission and clutch.

JASO MA2: This is a higher standard specification for modern motorcycles. These oils are suitable for use in motorcycles with catalytic converters in the exhaust system.

JASO MB: This is a lower standard specification for scooters.

In order for an oil to meet the above JASO specifications, it must meet at least one of the following quality levels: API SG, SH, SJ, SL, SM ILSAC GF-1, GF-2, GF-3 ACEA A1 / B1, A3 / B3, A3 / B4, A5 / B5, C2, C3 Although the above motorcycle oil specifications are by far the most important and recognized worldwide, JASO introduced a rating system for two-stroke oils back in 1994. Modern two-stroke motorcycles and scooters have much tighter tolerances and also require oil that produces less ash.

The JASO two-stroke oil classifications are as follows:
JASO FA:
This is the lowest specification, testing lubricity, detergency, starting torque, exhaust smoke and exhaust blockage. This specification was officially declared obsolete in 2005, although it is still in use.

JASO FB: This specification is slightly higher than JASO FA and tests the same properties. It requires higher lubricity, detergent additives, exhaust smoke and exhaust blockage. It meets ISO Global Specification EGB.

JASO FC: This specification requires the same lubricity and starting torque tests as JASO FB, but has higher standards for detergency and exhaust and exhaust blockage. It meets ISO Global Specification EGC.

JASO FD: This specification has the same standards as JASO FC, except for a higher detergent requirement. It complies with the ISO Global Specification.

AUTOMOTIVE AND MACHINERY

JASO DL-1:
An oil specifically designed for light-duty diesel engines equipped with exhaust aftertreatment devices.

JASO DH-1: A high-sulphate ash oil designed for the lubrication of heavy-duty diesel engines and not suitable for exhaust aftertreatment devices.

JASO DH-2: Low-sulfate ash oil designed for the lubrication of heavy-duty diesel engines, especially those equipped with exhaust aftertreatment devices.

JASO GLV-1: Ultra-low viscosity, fuel economy, passenger car engine oil.

JASO 315-1A: Specification defining the Dexron Vi type of automatic transmission fluid. This specification has now been renamed JASO 1-A.
