Specifications of the most common car automatic transmission oils (ATF)
What is ATF oil?
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is a special oil used in automatic transmissions to ensure smooth and precise gear changes, lubricate moving components and protect the transmission from wear and overheating. Unlike engine oil, ATF oil must withstand a wide range of complex operating conditions – it must have a certain coefficient of friction, thermally stable viscosity and high heat resistance so that the transmission can operate accurately, quickly and without failures.

The main functions of ATF oil:
Lubrication – reduces wear on gears, clutch packs and other moving parts.
Hydraulic operation – the automatic transmission uses pressurized oil to move pistons, clutches, brake bands and valve body elements. ATF oil acts as both a working fluid and a pressure transmission medium.
Cooling – removes heat generated inside the gearbox and helps maintain the correct operating temperature to prevent overheating.
Checking the coefficient of friction – every automatic transmission requires oil with specific additives that ensure the right friction. This allows the clutch packs to engage and disengage smoothly, without slipping or jerking.
protection against corrosion and contamination – prevents rust, oxidation and reduces the deposition of dirt, metal dust, varnish and resin residues.

Modern automatic transmissions (ZF, AISIN, GM, Mercedes, Honda, Toyota, etc.) are very sensitive to incorrect oil composition and friction characteristics. Therefore, ATF oils use specific manufacturer specifications and approvals, such as Dexron, Mercon, MB 236.X, Toyota WS or ZF Lifeguard.
Using the wrong ATF oil can cause gear shifting failures, slipping clutch packs, or even serious damage to the transmission.
