What does bimetal mean?

What does bimetal mean?

Bimetallic means that the tool is made of two different metals , combined into one strong blade or blade.
A typical bimetallic hacksaw blade consists of:

  • HSS (high speed steel) – very hard and wear-resistant cutting edge

  • hcs (high carbon steel) – elastic and flexible backing material

this means that the cutting part of the blade is extremely hard, but the rest of the blade remains flexible and does not break as easily.

✔ Why is bimetal good?

  • high wear resistance

  • high heat resistance (does not dull quickly)

  • elastic , does not break or split easily

  • also suitable for stainless steel , steel, metal pipes and strong materials

  • long-lasting

Therefore, bimetal is superior to conventional HCS in almost all applications.

✔ Are hacksaw blades also made of non-bimetal?

Yes, bimetal is a high-quality option, but cheaper ones are also available.

1) HCS (high carbon steel)

  • cheapest

  • flexible, but dulls more quickly

  • suitable for cutting soft metal and wood

  • not suitable for stainless steel , hard steel or pipes

2) hss (high speed steel, without bimetallic layer)

  • the entire blade is made of hard HSS steel (high-speed cutting steel)

  • the blade is very hard, but more brittle (breaks more easily)

  • suitable for special tasks, not a universal cutting blade

3) tct (tungsten carbide tips) iron saw blades

  • tungsten carbide teeth

  • also cut:

    • stainless

    • hardened metal

    • thick steel

    • abrasive materials

  • more expensive, but super durable

✔ short summary

bimetal = hss cutting edge + hcs body → strong, flexible, durable.
