What is fap fluid and why is it needed in a car?

What is fap fluid and why is it needed in a car? FAP fluid is a special additive that some diesel cars need to keep their diesel particulate filter (FAP/DPF) from clogging. Simply put, this fluid helps the car burn off the dirt in its exhaust so the engine can breathe freely.

How does fap liquid work?

A diesel car produces soot when driving. It accumulates in the FAP filter.
FAP fluid helps soot burn more easily , even when you drive slowly or for short distances.
Without fluid, the filter cannot clean itself sufficiently and may eventually become clogged .

Where do you put the fap fluid?

it is not poured into the fuel tank .
The car has a separate small tank , which is usually located under the bottom of the car next to the fuel tank.
the car itself adds fluid in small amounts with each refueling.

How quickly does fap fluid run out?

fap fluid does not wear out quickly.
On average, it needs to be added every 120,000 - 180,000 km .
On some models, the need may arise as early as around 80,000 km , depending on driving style.

A 2.2-liter tank usually lasts up to 150,000 km .

Do all cars use the same fluid?

do not use. there are several different types of fluids (eolys dpx42, eolys 176, powerflex, infineum f7995, etc.).
Every car needs the right type of fluid, which is usually determined by the VIN code .

The wrong fluid can cause:

  • too rapid filter wear,

  • error messages,

  • problems with regeneration.

What car brands use fap additives?

use:

  • Citroen

  • Peugeot

  • ford (with psa engines)

  • volvo 1.6d and 2.0d (with PSA engine)

  • mazda 1.6d

  • mini 1.6d

does not use:

  • volkswagen, audi, škoda, seat

  • BMW

  • Mercedes

  • toyota
they do filter cleaning without any additives.

Can you add the fap liquid yourself?

Technically it is possible, but it is mostly done in a workshop because:

  • the tank is located under the bottom of the car,

  • a lift or channels are needed,

  • After filling, the system must be reset with diagnostics .

short summary

  • FAP fluid helps diesel cars clean soot from exhaust gases.

  • The liquid goes into a separate tank , not into the fuel.

  • it is usually added every 120-180 thousand km .

  • Different cars have different fluids – you need to choose the right one according to the specification.

  • The wrong fluid or an empty tank can cause costly mistakes and a clogged filter.
