yellow top: Use this when the electrical load is higher than average or when the discharge cycle is longer than a normal engine start, such as vehicles without alternators. this also includes vehicles whose electrical load may exceed the average power of the generator (for example, aftermarket audio systems, gps, chargers, winches, snowplows, inverters). this can also include vehicles that have a lot of electronics installed at the factory, such as minibuses with power sliding doors and a dvd player, especially if the dvd player is used when the car's engine is not running.

Optima battery charging:
the optima battery is an agm battery, not a gel battery or a regular flooded lead acid battery. a deeply discharged optima battery (below 10.5v) will not test or charge properly if treated as a gel cell or a normal flooded battery. a handheld electronic battery tester is likely to give inaccurate test results.

the optima battery has the advantage of very low internal resistance, which enables both high current output and efficient charging. this advantage also allows the optima battery to last longer than its specified rating and operate at a lower voltage than conventional flooded batteries. all of which can be confusing when charging a deeply discharged optima. most standard battery chargers have a built-in feature that prevents charging below 10.5 volts. if your optima battery drains below this, the normal battery charger may not start.

most high-quality modern battery chargers now have built-in features for charging AGM batteries, such as Optima batteries. some have specific agm settings that should be used to charge the optima battery. do not use gel or gel/agm settings as they will not fully charge the optima battery and may damage it over time. but even some agm compatible chargers will not charge deeply discharged (below 10.5v) optima batteries.

for normal charging we recommend a maximum of 10 amps, 13.8-15.0 volts. for maintenance charging we recommend a maximum of 1 amp, 13.2-13.8 volts.

under normal (engine starting) conditions, the quiescent voltage of the optima battery should never be below 10.5 volts. most 12 volt chargers (old or new) or generators will adequately supply the optima battery with at least 10.5 volts. we usually only see charging issues when it's related to standalone deep cycle applications or severely depleted optima batteries.
