Ignition system tools
Ignition system special tools: professional solutions for maintenance and repair
The ignition system of a modern internal combustion engine is a precision mechanism where every component must operate in perfect timing. Whether it is changing spark plugs on a petrol engine or checking spark plugs on a diesel engine, using the right tools is critical. Without special tools, there is a risk of damaging fragile ceramics, complex electronic components and even the threads of the cylinder head.
In this category, we offer a wide range of professional tools that make ignition system maintenance safe, fast and convenient, both in the home garage and in the car service.
spark plug wrenches and sockets
The engine compartments of modern cars are compact and the spark plugs are often located in deep shafts that are inaccessible with a standard spanner. Special spark plug sockets are designed with these conditions in mind:
- Cartridges with a magnet or rubber retainer: these hold the candle securely in the cartridge, allowing it to be easily removed from a deep hole and a new one to be installed without damaging the ceramics.
- Thin wall sockets: On many modern engines (e.g. BMW, PSA, Mini), the spark plug holes are so narrow that a standard socket will not fit. A thin wall 14mm or 16mm socket is indispensable in this case.
- Hinged keys: allow access to plugs in difficult locations where direct approach is obstructed.
ignition coil removal tools
Before you can get to the spark plugs, you need to remove the ignition coils. "Coil-on-plug" ignition coils often sit very tightly on the end of the spark plug and are sealed with rubber grommets. Removing them by prying them with a screwdriver often results in the ignition coil breaking or the valve cover being damaged.
Using special ignition coil pullers (especially common on VAG group cars – VW, Audi, Porsche), you can safely and evenly pull the coil straight up, preventing cracking of the plastic housing.
diagnostics and spark testers
If your engine is running unevenly or misfiring, it's important to identify the culprit. Spark testers are simple but effective devices that are connected between the ignition coil and the spark plug. They allow you to visually check the presence and strength of a spark without having to replace expensive components.
spark plug tools for diesel engines
Diesel engine owners have a selection of tools for replacing spark plugs. Since spark plugs tend to burn into the cylinder head over time, removing them is risky. Special reamers (for cleaning the seats) and extraction kits help avoid costly cylinder head repairs.
An investment in a proper ignition system tool will pay for itself with the first use, preventing major damage from broken parts.
